Leah Rachel Fischer: Work with the American Jewish World Service

Leah Rachel Fischer enjoys the opportunity to help those in need. A generous individual, Fischer’s enthusiasm for helping others has been on full display not only during her past commitment to and volunteer work with a local animal adoption organization (Hop-A-Long), but also during her 2008 experience with the American Jewish World Service.

As an American Jewish World Service volunteer, Leah Rachel Fischer relished in the opportunity to travel with a group of 12 to Kanchipuram, a small town in Southern India struggling with poverty. The two-month trip, which occurred in 2008, put Fischer and her fellow volunteers face-to-face with the local culture and customs of the small town, as well as the conditions the local population was forced to cope with on a daily basis.

Over the course of their trip, Service volunteers had the opportunity to build a school for the impoverished children of the community, making a positive and lasting contribution while simultaneously experiencing something profound, eye-opening and educational.
